Anything else I should know? How many fry usually survive to become adults? {How many jars should I buy for them?}

Tank for sale in LA [May. 21st, 2012|09:08 pm]

After my last betta died a bit over a year ago, I just haven't had the heart to start keeping them again. I get so very attached and sad when they pass! Anyway, I've decided to sell off my setup. If you are in or near Los Angeles and interested, let me know (I'd rather not ship this as the cost would be astronomical)

More details... )

My Betta, Jack (The Ripper) [May. 12th, 2012|01:22 pm]

I've had him for about 14 months now. This is an old photo taken way back when I first brought him home. He still looks magnificant today (darker color than this photo) but I just can't seem to get a good picture but I just wanted to share my baby with everyone. Picture under the cut: Read more... )

I recently found myself in possession of a 10gal tank and a plethora of java ferns. After the tank was all sorted, I wandered over to the LFS to pick up a trio of females (they only had the three). I was going to call it done at that, but upon stopping by a Petco to grab more plants I found another trio of girls sitting in rather nasty looking cups and, well... I'm a sucker for a sad fish face.

My main question is: How long does it usually take girls to sort out their hierarchy? I've noticed a bit of flaring and shoving so far, but right now everyone seems pretty content to find a hiding place and sit things out. I assume that will change once everyone is over the shock of 'oh my god, space.'

My second question is: Is six too much for a 10gal? I don't plan on putting anything else in there besides plants, and it's already heavily stocked with enough hiding places for everyone.

Baby bettas at Petco [Apr. 19th, 2012|01:37 pm]

ketrino
Has anyone else noticed the baby bettas at Petco (I only go to chain stores cuz I need Stress Coat)? It bothers me, personally. They look like they can live in that cup. Can you say stunted bettas from people seeing this and believing it to be true? Or think about some inexperienced person getting a baby and putting it in a tank with a filter. Bye, baby!

They're pretty small- probly half an inch or so (can't totally remember, this was a while back). I couldn't tell what gender they were, and I can't remember if males are born with their long fins or what (I know they take time to color in). Either way, WHY?! Yes, they're cute, but NO!

SBD no more! [Mar. 19th, 2012|08:37 am]

Oddly enough, my betta who had swim bladder problems for months suddenly just...got over it a few weeks ago. I actually didn't do anything to help him. Over a span of two days, he got better somehow. First I noticed him being a lot more active, swimming down in the tank instead of sticking at the top, and the next day, he was hanging around on the bottom with no problem. So, he's cured, somehow. Hurray!

So either I guess it can just go away on it's own, or keeping feedings down helped.

In other news, I found a LFS that doesn't have a million bettas lining bookshelf or in small cups. They were in masonry jars. Not perfect, but better! At least they could actually swim around.

Fin rot! Help! [Mar. 4th, 2012|07:25 pm]

beansofdeath
I think Bubbly has fin rot. A few days ago, I'm not sure how long precisely, maybe as much as a week ago, I noticed his fins were torn. Mostly his tail was torn everywhere at the end, but his top fin was torn a bit at the end, and the long bottom fin was torn just a bit near the back end. I assumed he had got caught in the filter or something and would get better. I did an extra water change in case the water was too dirty. The next day, the rips in his tail were much worse, and got noticeably worse as the day wore on.

So I took him out of his regular five-gallon tank and put him in the little one-litre container he came with, letting the container sit in the aquarium to benefit from the heater, because I was desperate for the damage to stop and figured there was something wrong with the aquarium water. He's been in the "hospital container" for a few days, I think this is the fourth day, with daily 100% water changes, aquarium salt, and water conditioner. I thought I saw some new fin growth yesterday and this morning, but a couple of hours ago, I looked at him, and his tail was all torn up even worse than before! There's nothing in the container with him except a thermometer, so it's unlikely her ripped it, and besides, there's no fin particles floating around in the container, so unless Bubbly ate them, it has to be bacteria, as far as I know. Should I be doing twice-daily water changes because the container's so small? What should I do? Help!

Here's a picture from an hour or two ago. The damage at the top of his tail, with all the spines showing, is all new today, and he still has what I took to be a tiny amount of new fin growth near the bottom of the tail, although it's not showing up very well in the picture.

Hello everyone,
It's been a long time since I've posted, but I've recently obtained a new betta friend. Actually three. Two females and a male.
A couple days after I got them, I noticed the male had a bit of a belly, so I decided to fast him for a few days, and just now as I was feeding him a bit of pea, I noticed his mouth is rather odd looking, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they think is going on. Not even sure if it's a bad thing or not. It just isn't normal looking, and I've never seen it before. Thought I'd make sure.

EDIT: How odd. It seems back to normal, now. I know fish can move their lips around. Perhaps that was just what he was doing? It looked like it was stuck out or something, as you can see in the picture. Anyway, I guess he's fine. Weird.
